civil services chronicle As Government inaugurated India’s  first multi-modal terminal on the Ganga river in Varanasi on November 12, the spotlight is back on how navigation of arguably India’s  greatest river would impact it. The development upscpreparation books marks the commencement of the government’s jai marg vikas project (JMVP) that aims to develop the stretch of the ganga between Varanasi and halide for navigation of large veassels weighing up to 1,500-2,000 tones, it includes the construction of three multimodal terminals (Varanasi in utter Pradesh, Sahibganj in Jharkhand and haldia in west Bengal) two intermodal terminals; five roll on roll off terminal pairs; a new navigation lock at farakka; assured depth dredging; integrated vessel repair and maintenance faculty, differential global positioning system, river information system, river training and river conservancy works chronicleias magazine.
